West Bengal Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has announced the formal commencement of the UG Medical and Dental academic session 2026-27. According to a notification dated September 10, 2026, the academic session for undergraduate medical and dental courses in West Bengal will formally begin from September 15, 2026.
The notification was issued by the Director of Medical Education, Government of West Bengal, and addressed to the Directors, Principals and Deans of government and private medical and dental colleges across the state.
UG Medical and Dental Session to Start on September 15
As per the notification, the formal start of the UG Medical & Dental 2026-27 session shall be from September 15, 2026. Individual colleges have been directed to arrange their college-specific routine accordingly.
The decision has been taken in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) schedule for commencement of the academic session for UG courses, which specifies September 15, 2026, as the commencement date.
NEET UG 2026 Counselling Schedule
The NMC schedule included in the notification indicates that the second round of counselling for UG medical admissions is being conducted during September 2026.

Colleges to Arrange Academic Routine
The West Bengal Directorate of Medical Education has directed individual medical and dental colleges to prepare and arrange their respective academic routines in accordance with the formal commencement date.
The notification has been circulated to various authorities and institutions, including WBUHS, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, West Bengal Medical Council and concerned medical and dental colleges.
Important Update for NEET UG 2026 Candidates
Candidates who have secured admission to MBBS or BDS courses in West Bengal for the 2026-27 academic session should take note of the September 15 commencement date and follow the instructions issued by their respective colleges regarding reporting, orientation and commencement of classes.
Candidates participating in the ongoing counselling process should also keep track of their allotment and joining deadlines, particularly the September 18, 2026 last date for joining mentioned in the counselling schedule.
